What is a Mommy Makeover?

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can have a profound impact on a woman's body, often leaving lasting changes even in women who maintain an active, healthy lifestyle. The term "mommy makeover" refers to a combination of cosmetic procedures designed to restore and enhance a woman's body after the physical changes that come with motherhood.

This personalized approach allows for multiple areas of the body to be addressed in a single, comprehensive surgery, which reduces the need for extended downtime and multiple recovery periods, making the process more efficient and less disruptive to your lifestyle.

At Wirth Plastic Surgery, we offer a tailored experience as an aesthetic concierge practice, guiding you through your transformation from beginning to end to ensure a smooth and stress-free journey. Dr. Wirth is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Newport Beach, fully qualified to perform mommy makeover surgery with precision and care.

Had my breast implants and tummy tuck done in one visit. I wish I had done this sooner. I am so happy with the results. I feel absolutely wonderful. I'm proud of my body. I felt very comfortable and so trusting of his expertise to help me. He is just the kindest and most compassionate man I know. He truly listens to what I really wanted. I wanted natural looking breasts. My breasts feel so natural and it's amazing that silicone could look and feel this way. My belly is as flat and hard as any fit belly would be. How Does a Mommy Makeover Work?

A mommy makeover is a very personalized surgery, and most women require a number of cosmetic procedures to reverse the effects of childbirth and pregnancy.

Your makeover may include a tummy tuck, breast augmentation and/or breast lift, labiaplasty, and more. Prior to surgery, Garrett Wirth, MD, MS, FACS will work with you to design a personalized surgical plan. Your customized mommy makeover may include procedures such as:

Tummy Tuck

Tummy tuck is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat and skin from the abdominal region and tighten the muscles, resulting in a more toned stomach.

Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a cosmetic procedure elected to create larger, more symmetrical breasts through the surgical insertion of implants.

Breast Lift

A breast lift is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess tissue surrounding the breasts, correct breast and nipple position, and lift the nipple areolar complex, resulting in a more youthful breast contour.

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty is a cosmetic procedure intended to improve the appearance of the labia minora through the removal and reshaping of excess tissue.

Liposuction

Liposuction is a procedure that removes pockets of stubborn fat that diet and exercise can't seem to get rid of.

Because your mommy makeover may involve multiple cosmetic surgeries, Dr. Wirth may recommend that you undergo your surgeries in stages if this will result in increased safety for you.

What Happens After my Mommy Makeover?

The extent of your recovery will depend on what your makeover entails. Following surgery, Dr. Wirth will provide you with specific aftercare instructions. It is likely that you will experience discomfort and require someone to help you get around for at least the first 72 hours after your surgery.

Garrett Wirth, MD, MS, FACS may provide you with prescription pain medication to alleviate your discomfort. You may also be required to wear compression garments to minimize swelling and aid in the recovery process.

Getting Back to Normal

You should be up and about the day after surgery, gradually resuming light activities. Most patients are able to return to work within two to three weeks; however, rigorous activities such as exercise should be avoided for several weeks.

Several months may pass before the final results of your makeover are apparent. The results will be more or less permanent; however, significant weight fluctuations or additional pregnancies may alter results. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercise program will increase the probability of long-lasting results.

Recovering from Your Mommy Makeover

Your recovery after a mommy makeover will be a gradual process, depending on the number and type of procedures involved in your makeover.

You should plan to stay at home and rest for several days, and you will have medication to manage any discomfort. The initial days of rest are critical to the healing process, so take the time you need to rest and recover.

Following Dr. Wirth’s postoperative instructions is an essential aspect of speeding your recovery. Most patients can go back to light activities at home within three to four days and can go back to work within one to two weeks, while some may require longer.

Some residual bruising and swelling may persist for up to two months after a mommy makeover, but this should not hold you back from your usual activities.

Mommy Makeover FAQs

Can a mommy makeover help me lose weight?

A mommy makeover is not a weight loss procedure, but when fat and tissue is removed, you will lose some weight. The goal is to resculpt and restore your body. You may need lliposuction to remove fatty deposits at the waist, buttocks, and thighs, so you will lose some weight through that process.

Do I have to be a mom to get a mommy makeover?

Dr. Wirth performs custom body recontouring for any person, man or woman, who has lost a great deal of weight after bariatric surgery or diet and exercise. You do not have to be a mother to undergo our custom body recontouring treatments.

What kind of anesthesia will be used in a mommy makeover?

You may be put under general anesthesia or under intravenous sedation with local anesthesia. The type of anesthesia will be chosen based upon the extent of the corrections you need, with a focus on what would be safest for your health.

When can I return to work?

Expect to miss one to two weeks of work after your mommy makeover. You need time to heal, rest, and recover, and rushing the process is not advised.

When can I go back to my exercise program?

You will need to wait at least six weeks before going back to performing any vigorous exercise, including yoga. It is important that no stress is placed on the abdominal muscles, so the incisions heal correctly.

How long does a mommy makeover surgery take?

If you are having a tummy tuck and a breast lift, lift with augmentation, or other breast surgery, you can expect your surgery to take in the range of three hours to complete.

When will I be able to drive after my mommy makeover?

You will not be allowed to operate a vehicle until you are off painkillers (which is about one week or less), and your full range of motion is restored.

When can I wear a bathing suit?

Most people feel “beach ready” within about two to three months, after residual swelling is gone.

When will I see the final results of my mommy makeover?

For full recovery, including scars fading, it may take up to a year, although many see the final results sooner.

When can I wear a real bra?

If your breasts have been restored as part of your mommy makeover, you will need to hold off on wearing a standard underwire bra until the incisions are fully healed, at about the six-week mark.
