Dedicated Surgeon Addressing Gynecomastia

Surgical techniques such as liposuction or surgical tissue removal may be utilized to create a flatter more contoured chest. Garrett Wirth, MD, MS, FACS is a Board Certified plastic surgeon and has years of extensive training and experience performing male breast reduction surgery in Newport Beach.

Who is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction?

Gynecomastia is an embarrassing condition that can affect men of all ages. You may be a potential candidate for male breast reduction if you meet some of the following criteria:

  • You possess good overall physical and mental health
  • You are near or currently at an ideal body weight for your height
  • You have realistic surgical expectations

Other factors such as medical history, skin quality, and lifestyle choices will also be taken into consideration during your preoperative consultation with Garrett Wirth, MD, MS, FACS. During your consultation, he will be able to determine if male breast reduction is the best choice for your cosmetic goals.

How Does Male Breast Reduction Work?

Male breast reduction is typically an outpatient procedure and can be performed under local or general anesthesia. The entire procedure lasts about an hour and a half; however, more extensive male breast reduction may take longer.

During surgery, Dr. Wirth will remove fat and glandular tissue from your chest area through an incision made near the nipples (around the areola- the colored tissue around the nipple) or armpits.

Once the incision has been made, Dr. Wirth will employ a predetermined fat removal technique such as liposuction or excision (removal of tissue with a scalpel). In some cases, more than one technique may be needed to achieve ideal results.

What Happens After a Male Breast Reduction?

Following surgery, Dr. Wirth will provide you with specific aftercare guidelines. You may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising. To help reduce significant swelling, Dr. Wirth may ask you to wear a firm elastic garment across your chest for up to three weeks following surgery. He may also prescribe pain medication to alleviate any discomfort that you may be feeling.

You should be on your feet and able to walk the day of surgery; however a full recovery will take up to three weeks. The vast majority of swelling should begin to subside within the first few weeks, and the final results of your breast reduction/gynecomastia surgery will be apparent within a couple of months. Most patients are able to return to work that same week depending on work type and resume most everyday activities. Strenuous activities such as exercise can be resumed after six weeks, ideally.
