Tuck It In
So many men and women struggle with the look of their abdomen. This can be especially hard to deal with as men and women age. Even after proper diet and exercise, a lot of men and women can still have that “pooch” that sits on our stomachs and can’t rid themselves of it. Luckily, with modern cosmetic surgery and skilled surgeons like Doctor Garrett Wirth, many people are candidates to get a tummy tuck or a mini tummy tuck to solve this problem.
Tummy Tuck 101
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery option that can help to reduce the excess fat and skin around your midsection when diet and exercise haven’t worked to achieve your goals. The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck would be someone who is seeking to have a tighter and flatter abdomen and has maintained their most fit and stable weight achievable for several months.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Most men and women would say they are seeking this, but those who qualify for a tummy tuck must meet specific recommendations set by Dr. Wirth. This is not a good option for someone who just wants to lose weight. A tummy tuck is an option for men and women who have tried all they could with diet and exercise to achieve that ideal body shape but could not get there due to changes that occurred through pregnancy, previous surgery, significant weight changes and other reasons. Other recommendations for a qualified tummy tuck patient include good overall health and that women have finished having children.
What Causes a Protruding Midsection?
A few different factors can lead to protruding midsections. Some of these include:
- Aging
- Post-pregnancy
- Previous surgery
- Significant weight loss
- Some normal anatomy variations (such as diastasis recti)
About the Tummy Tuck Surgery
A tummy tuck is a relatively easy surgery. The procedure will only take 2-4 hours overall and you will be under anesthesia. Dr. Garrett Wirth will make only the minimal amount of incision necessary and work to keep the final scar line very low, as in just above the pubic area. The loose skin will then be separated from the abdominal wall to remove excess skin, fat, and tissue. If needed, Dr. Wirth may use liposuction to help remove any excess fat, especially in the hip and waist areas. Then your skin is re-draped and your “belly button” is repositioned within the flatter, and tighter abdominal skin.
For patients who may be looking for a less invasive procedure, a mini tummy tuck might be a good option. The ideal candidate for a mini tummy tuck would be someone who has most of their issues below the belly button. This causes the surgeon to remove less of the skin from the abdominal wall. Candidates should also be in good physical health most of their lives but have plateaued with diet and exercise.
In this procedure, Dr. Wirth will make a shorter incision just at or above the pubic region. This incision is similar to a C-section incision, making it a modified tummy tuck. The rest of the surgery is pretty much the same as a normal tummy tuck. Recovery for a mini tummy tuck can be easier since less of the skin was detached from the abdominal wall and generally less muscle tightening is done for this procedure.
