The Basics of Labiaplasty
A labiaplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that can correct issues with the function, appearance and comfort of the labia minora (the inner folds of the vagina). Labiaplasties are becoming an increasingly common surgery as women seek to become more comfortable and confident with the look and functionality of their labias. Dr. Garrett Wirth will improve and resolve these issues as a result of your labiaplasty.
Why Have a Labiaplasty?
While any woman with realistic expectations can undergo the procedure, many choose to have a labiaplasty after having children. Dr. Wirth understands the changes that a woman’s body goes through during and after giving birth and can help improve the aspects of your post-baby body that you may not like.
You may also choose to have a labiaplasty if sexual intercourse causes you pain (due to an enlarged labia). Another condition that can make you a good candidate for a labiaplasty is if your labia is asymmetrical or misshapen. This can cause embarrassment when wearing tight clothing or a swimsuit, and potential pain when exercising.
If any of these issues apply to you, you may want to consider a labiaplasty. Dr. Wirth will help you determine if a labiaplasty is right for you and if your expectations are realistic at a consultation. From there, you and Dr. Wirth can make a detailed and personalized plan.
About Labiaplasty Surgery
A labiaplasty should only take one to two hours and is usually an outpatient surgery. During your procedure, Dr. Wirth will follow the plan that you have made with him at prior consultations. You will likely receive local anesthesia in addition to a sedative before beginning the surgery, which will make you sleepy, unless you choose general anesthesia. Following this, the labiaplasty will begin.
Dr. Wirth will use specialized techniques to reduce the surplus (or excess) tissue from your labia. The amount of tissue removed will depend on your needs and the look you wish to achieve, as will the location of the incisions and pattern of tissue removal. After being sutured, you will soon be free to go home and begin your recovery. Be sure to arrange in advance for someone to drive you home, including having the devices to protect your surgery that Dr. Wirth will explain to you.
As with all plastic surgery procedures, it is critically important that you follow the instructions Dr. Wirth provides. Understanding and obeying these directions can help your recovery process. It is important to rest for the first few days after surgery and give your body the time it needs to heal. Limited to no sitting will be instructions reinforced by Dr. Wirth and his team. In the days following your labiaplasty, you may experience swelling and discomfort. However, this should be resolved within two weeks. Keep your wounds clean to prevent infection and follow any other specialized instructions Dr. Wirth has given you.
You will likely be instructed to abstain from sexual intercourse for at least six weeks or more following your labiaplasty. You should be completely healed within three months, although this varies from individual to individual. If you have questions or concerns about the function, appearance or comfort level of your labia, Dr. Wirth can help you decide if a labiaplasty is the correct choice for you. You don’t have to continue being unhappy with your labia.
