Is it Painful to Have a Mole Removed?
You possibly have one or more moles on your face or body and although most moles are harmless, they’re also unwanted and sometimes unattractive. If you’re unhappy with your mole, you should contact a plastic surgeon to have it removed. Most people wonder if mole removal is painful. Honestly, not really. So, let’s discuss what moles are, how mole removal works, and what recovery is like.
What are Moles?
Moles can appear on any part of your body, and most adults have 10 to 40 moles in different parts of their bodies. Moles grow when pigment cells grow in dense clusters of skin rather than spreading out evenly.
Types of Moles — Normal & Atypical
Normal moles are usually small, round, and perfectly symmetrical. In fact, normal moles are so symmetrical that you can draw a line down the middle, and they’ll look perfectly alike on both sides. They usually range in color from pink to black.
Atypical moles, however, are asymmetrical and uneven. They’re large, uneven, have jagged borders, and different coloring. Sometimes, atypical moles can also irritate your skin, cause bleeding, or grow large. As such, atypical moles are in greater need of removal.
Mole Removal — Shave Excision & Surgical Excision
Mole removal is an extremely easy procedure and usually concludes in a single session. There are two types of mole removal procedures — shave excision and surgical excision.
- Shave Excision: The doctor will slice away the mole with a razor-like tool. Following that, they will use electrosurgical feathering to blend the wound against the surrounding skin. There’s no need for stitches after the procedure.
- Surgical Excision: The doctor will surgically remove the entire mole down to the subcutaneous fat layer. The incision will then be sutured up and closed.
Does Mole Removal Hurt and Scar?
The mole removal procedure will be done under local anesthesia, so you don’t feel anything. As mentioned above, you shouldn’t expect any scarring during shave excision, but you may have some scars during surgical excision. The mole removal scar will heal within three weeks, but you won’t feel any pain or discomfort during the healing process.
