Breast Augmentation Revision
Breast augmentation revision occurs when implants need to be removed or replaced, and possibly the breast implant pocket needs to be corrected. This procedure can also correct any complications that may have arisen from your previous breast augmentation. As with many things in life, it is often much harder to correct problems than do have it done correctly from the start. Dr. Garrett Wirth is an experienced, knowledgeable surgeon who will work with you to rectify whatever problem you may be dealing with. As a Professor of Plastic Surgery(wos) at the University of California Irvine Medical Center, Dr. Wirth not only had to deal with correcting these problems but he also had the responsibility and ability to teach future plastic surgeons how to treat these deformities.
When to Consider Breast Augmentation Revision
You may want to consider a breast augmentation revision if your implants are malpositioned (not in the best or correct locations for your body). This could be that they fall too far to the side when you lay down, they have fallen below the lower fold of your breast, or they are riding up too high, as some examples. Capsular contracture (when the tissue around the implant tightens and squeezes the implant, then becoming firm and riding up on your chest, sometimes even associated with pain) is another cause that may lead you to seek a breast augmentation revision. Lastly, you may choose to get a revision if you are unhappy with your breast size or placement after your augmentation, in need of a breast lift, or want to remove your implants entirely. Whatever the case, Dr. Wirth will listen to your concerns and communicate your options to you.
Your breast augmentation revision procedure varies depending on the reason you are seeking a revision. Because there are many different issues to address, each one requires a specialized approach to ensure you get the best care possible. However, in each scenario, Dr. Wirth will make sure you are aware and comfortable with the plan that you worked together to come up with prior to the procedure.
If you feel that your breasts are not satisfactory or are not what you anticipated after your initial breast augmentation, a revision can either add or replace implants so you can achieve the look you desire. Often, a surgeon may use the incision site from your augmentation to insert or remove your implants and possibly the scar tissue around the implant (the capsule). From there, the implant space will either be expanded if you desire larger breasts, or decreased in size with medical product or stitched up to insert smaller implants. The implants and pockets can even be removed permanently without any replacement implants, but this often requires a breast lift (mastopexy) procedure to obtain your best final results.
If you are dealing with capsular contracture, it is likely that the original incision site will be used again to remove the breast implant and now-hardened implant capsule and replace it with a new implant. Another scenario that can require breast augmentation revision is if you are displeased with where your breast implants were placed. Dr. Wirth can remedy this by using the scar tissue around the implant and reconstructing it to fit into the newly decided-upon position.
Post-Surgery Protocols
Swelling is typically gone by six weeks after the procedure. Until then, you should sleep with your head and back elevated for the first week. You may shower between one and three days post-surgery (depending on when your drains are removed), but you should avoid baths and hot tubs for at least a month. If Dr. Wirth instructs you to wear a compression bra, it is important that you wear it during the early healing period. It will prevent swelling and fluid retention. Massage exercises as instructed by Dr. Wirth and his team, and sometimes medications, are utilized to get you your best possible results.
