Being Board Certified: Is It All That Important?
When selecting a surgeon, you’ve probably noticed that certain candidates claim to be “board certified”? What does it mean? Every practicing doctor is required to be licensed in the state they practice, but is that license enough? Will that license guarantee that they know enough to perform plastic surgery on you? The best treatment required for your needs may mean that a single certification isn’t enough. Dr. Wirth wants to make sure that you know how to tell the difference!
It is important that your doctor is board certified to ensure that they are up-to-date on the best practices in medicine. Dr. Wirth’s credentials means he is not only current on these practices, but experienced in performing them as well. You will want your surgeon to be board certified to work in a specific medical specialty; it is important to understand that there are only a certain number of “boards” under the American Board of Medical Specialties, which does include Plastic Surgery, but does not include “Board Certified in Cosmetic Surgery” or “American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.” The consumer should beware of cosmetic surgeons who claim they are certified by these unofficial boards.
Doctor Garrett Wirth has a long list of accomplishments, but one of the most important is that he is board certified in Plastic Surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. To become board certified, a doctor must complete an undergraduate degree, an MD or DO degree followed by a several-year-long residency (some non-plastic surgery specialties are as little as three, and some residencies and fellowships take up to 10 years), and finally, a more rigorous examination from board members. After receiving a board certification, doctors must continually be working to keep this certification. To keep this board certification, doctors are required to continually study current healthcare advancements and participate in the ABMS Maintenance of Certification, which Dr. Wirth has completed as well!
Dr Wirth offers a long list of procedures for his patients. These procedures include rhinoplasty (nose surgery), breast enhancement, breast enlargement, mommy makeover, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), and many other options for a better you! Dr. Wirth remains current on these procedures, but also remains true to principles and anatomy in order to provide the best service for you to meet your beauty goals. As a Professor of Plastic Surgery (wos), he also teaches other current and future plastic surgeons locally, nationally and internationally.
To perform plastic surgery and other treatments, Dr. Wirth believes you should only work with a doctor who is board certified in the specialty you seek (such as American Board of Plastic Surgery, not something like the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery) to ensure that they are capable of practicing in a specific field of medicine while adhering to the highest standards of knowledge, safety and application of procedures or treatments. This also helps to know that your surgeon knows current treatments and will ensure that you will get the best treatment available. Dr. Wirth received a Master’s Degree in Physiology and Cell Biology and a Doctorate of Medicine from Albany Medical College. He performed his residency in general surgery and completed his training in Plastic and Reconstructive surgery at the University of California – Irvine Medical Center. Dr. Wirth is currently board certified and a Diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He also teaches as a Professor of Plastic Surgery (wos) in the Department of Plastic Surgery and at the Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery Institute at University of California – Irvine Medical Center. He recently co-edited a plastic surgery textbook, as well as publishing Personalized Breast Care, a guide for cosmetic surgery, breast cancer and reconstruction to empower women for breast surgery and breast cancer. Dr. Wirth also publishes articles in national and international surgical journals.
Dr Wirth is currently a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, California Society of Plastic Surgeons, Orange County Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, and International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, among others. He believes that learning and teaching about plastic surgery is important to help everyone receive the treatment that is best for them. Doctor Wirth is dedicated to helping new plastic surgeons learn techniques to help others become successful in all their plastic surgery needs.
